Amazing redfish

I've been on a good redfish bite lately. Sarasota Bay  has been yielding reds up to 32 inches.

The fish have moved from their usual haunts and I found them by slowly poling my kayak over the shallow flats. The red are hanging out in and around sand holes.

Super trout fishing

I have been amazed at the trout fishing that's going on around Sarasota Bay.

Used to be, we didn't catch five trout over 4 pounds in a year. Now, that's happening several days a week.

Mark and Matt Fleischhauer of Illinois joined me last week. We landed seven trout over 4 pounds, including a 5.5-pounder.

Customer satisfaction

At least twice in the last month, I've had clients purchase Aqua-Bound Paddles after fishing with me. I'm not sure whether it's because they like the look of my Surge Carbon Paddle, they take my advice to heart or both?

Doesn't matter. They're making a wise choice.

Finally some down time

It has been a while since I posted. Business and fishing have been good, so free time has been at a premium.

While fishing the other day, I realized just how much I like my Aqua-Bound Surge Carbon Paddle. And it has nother to do with the fact that I'm sponsored by Aqua-Bound. Sure, that's nice, but the sponsorship wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't love the paddle.

Surge Carbon Paddle

I've been very impressed with my Surge Carbon Paddle since I got it a few weeks ago.

It's a beautiful paddle.

Most importantly, it's very efficient. It's light and very strong. I can really move my Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5 with it.

Busy week

I took today off because of the wind.

But I have four all-day fly-fishing trips scheduled this week. On Wednesday, we'll head for The Everglades to fly fish for freshwater species. I hope the exotics (oscar, Mayan cichlid) have rebounded for the cold of 2010.

I have saltwater fly trips scheduled Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Unbelievable trout fishing

Fishing for spotted seatrout in Sarasota Bay has been nothing short of unbelievable. I've been leading clients to big trout for the past four months at a spot along the east side of the bay.

Last week, I had a day off and headed there by myself. Wow!

My previous best trout was a 6 1/2-pound that I caught on a jerk worm in Pine Island Sound in March 2007.

A good paddle

I took Wade Collier of Longboat Key fishing the other day. He's new to kayak fishing and the area.

He bought a kayak, but wanted to go out with me to learn the nuances and the spots.

Windy days

In my business, windy days are the pits.

They keep me off the water and they stop the cash flow.

Wind costs me money.

It has been blowing here in southwest Florida all week, steadily blowing 20 mph and gusting up to 30.

I can fish in the wind, but not when it's that strong. I will take clients out in wind up to 15 mph. I will not jeopardize their safety.
